The Red Peony
Description
Description
Poor scholar Li Hanyi cannot afford to sit for the imperial examination. He sells calligraphy for red lucky scrolls and gives out face-readings at the Chang’an market. Li becomes friends with Shen Juxiang, who sells flowers nearby. When Hanyi is serving his customer, Gui Shouling – the Prince of Cheng – visits the market and spots Juxiang. Gui is keen on sending Juxiang to learn at a study hall. Juxiang agrees to the agreement so that she can support Hanyi financially. One year later, Hanyi won the first place in the provincial imperial examinations and became a reputed literati, thanks to the subsidy offered secretly by Juxiang. Gui Yanchang, the sister of the Prince adores Hanyi and invites him to meet at the study hall. Hanyi reunites with Juxiang because of this meeting, and is now clear about what has happened all along. The Prince intends to marry Juxiang, but realises Hanyi and Juxiang are in love; he imprisons Hanyi. To coerce Juxiang into marrying him, the Prince promises to release Hanyi and to offer him an official’s position in Suzhou; the Prince also allows Juxiang to see Hanyi off this journey. On the other hand, the Prince is sending a letter to Xie Baotong, the student of Suzhou’s governor, asking Xie to do harm to Hanyi. However, Wu Zhongyong, the person in charge of the letter-writing, is illiterate. As a result, the contents of the letter becomes the opposite of what the Prince wants them to be. Baotong follows what is said in the letter and performs the wedding ceremony for Hanyi and Juxiang. The Prince is furious about the outcome, but there is no more that he can do.
