“Ten Charges against Yan Song” by Lung Wai Cantonese Opera Troupe
Description
Description
Yan Song, the arrogant father of the much-favoured West Imperial Consort, yields immense power in court and fosters factions for private gains. The honourable and humane official Hai Rui, though holding a low-grade post, is adamant about fighting the villain. Yan Song’s son Shifan, backed by his father’s power, is a bully. He takes a girl by force and is arrested by Hai Rui. When informed of his arrest, Yan Song, and then the Imperial Concubine, barge into Hai Rui’s residence to intervene but he stands firm. Yan Song ruins the country further as time goes by, with the Emperor absconding from court for a consecutive three months. Seeing livelihoods are in peril because of this, Hai Rui decides to charge Yan Song in court. But well aware of the imperial order that ‘anyone who charges against Yan Song will be executed’, and that he will meet his death once he makes those charges, he wants to find out if his wife stands with him regarding this move. His wife, who loves him very much and is understanding and supporting, promises that in case of his demise, she will run the family and bring up their child. Thus reassured, Hai Rui makes the ten charges in court against Yan Song in the face of death. What with the Emperor being fatuous and Yan Song wielding power, all ten charges are overruled. When Hai Rui is about to be executed, the father of the Empress arrives in the nick of time with evidence of Yan Song’s treason. Yan song is sentenced to becoming a beggar, albeit with a golden bowl. Hai Rui’s loyalty to the sovereign and love for his people are well remembered by posterity.
