Almost 55
Dance

Description
Description
This November, Freespace presents two rerun performances of Almost 55, a heartfelt solo dance created for veteran local dancer Qiao Yang, resident artist with City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC).
After a dance career spanning four decades, including 23 years with CCDC, Qiao Yang premiered Almost 55 as her first full-length solo performance in January 2019. The physically challenging piece was developed over 12 months with Taiwanese choreography Chou Shu-yi. In brief spoken sections interspersed within the dance, Qiao Yang reveals details about her career, from performing traditional Chinese dance in her home town in Shaanxi in the early 1970s, to studying contemporary dance in Guangzhou in the 1980s, and moving to Hong Kong in the 1990s. Although performed by Qiao Yang alone, Almost 55 is a conversation between two dance artists of different generations and homelands on the history of contemporary dance, and on notions of identity and home.
This celebration of Qiao Yang’s dedication to the art of dance is created with artists from Hong Kong and Taiwan, including visual artist Lee Chi-wai, sound artist Steve Hui, dance filmmaker Maurice Lai and costume designer Lin Ching-ju, former collaborator with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre.
This event is part of a three-year CCDC in Residence programme at Freespace, and City Contemporary Dance Festival 2019.
