Academy Dance: Onward & Upward!

Description

Description

Snowflakes … starbursts … and just a gentle squeeze!

An intriguing combination to be sure – and found only in the wonderfully eclectic, ‘must-go-and-see’ April Onward and Upward! season from the Academy’s School of Dance. First in the spotlight is the exuberant cross-stream Echad Mi Yodea from one of the world’s choreographic luminaries – Israeli choreographer and Gaga Movement creator Ohad Naharin. In complete contrast – and with Tan Dun’s elegiac Heaven Earth, Mankind (1997) its inspiration – is the transcendental 8 Directions: To the Wind by Mainlander (and MFA in Dance graduate) Huang Lei. Further along in contrast is Australian choreographer Gabrielle Nankivell’s Scatter Study: rethrown, where movement ebbs and flows, then snaps to sharp, geometric attention; dancers come together, then scatter like starbursts. And the gentle squeeze The title of the work for the Ballet stream by Russian-born, German-based Sergei Vanaev. It’s quirky and a little off-target, full of surprises, and reflects much of what’s happening in ballet – especially in Europe. Importantly, the squeeze also speaks the language of a younger, here-and-now generation – dancers and audience alike.
