Academy Opera: Semele
Description
Description
Semele was first performed in London in 1744 at a time when Italian opera was ‘out of favour’ and more sober art was preferred. Thus, Handel turned to the Oratorio to retell classical and biblical stories in a chorus based dramatic form. But still behind the more ‘tasteful façade’ Handel’s ‘operatic’ genius for drama, conflict and sensuality remains as sharp and luxurious as ever. Disguised as a morality story of ‘wanting too much’, of arrogance and self-obsession Semele tells of the mortal princess who wants to be immortal and like the classical Icarus, who flew too close to the Sun, she is also burnt!
