Story of the Broken Mirror
General Yang Yue of Sui invades the Chen Dynasty and Princess Lechang uses herself to cover for her husband’s escape. As a token for their future reunion, the princess breaks a mirror and gives one half to her husband, Xu Deyan. Yang Yue is impressed by the princess’ courage and spares her life. The princess takes on the identity as Yang’s wife and lives on.
“Meeting in the Study” from The Dragon’s Order
Wang Ying and his alliance plan to usurp the throne, and they need a hero for the cause. So his daughter, Lingxian, is offered as wife to the winner of the fighting competition. Yao Gang wins and marries Lingxian, yet soon afterwards Yao discovers that Wang and his alliance has executed the Yao family. Devastated, Yao locks himself in the study as Lingxian comes seeking for him and learns the truth.
“Matching of the Embroidered Shoes” from The Case of the Headless Body
In Suzhou, a headless female body has been discovered, and scholar Liu Ziqing and lady Su Yugui are wrongfully accused as murderers. Official Zuo Weiming learns of the injustice and comes to further investigate the case. Using a leftover embroidered shoe, Zuo is able to lure the murderer Yang Liujiao and solves the case.
