The School of Chinese Opera is delighted to present three Cantonese opera excerpts of contrasting styles and performance techniques in Gongs and Drums. Adapted from Kunqu opera, ‘Stealing the Magical Plant’ from The Legend of the White Snake showcases demanding stage weaponry and combat techniques. The Jade Bracelet is a lighthearted classic of Cantonese opera featuring delicate acting skills. With the renowned Hong Kong Cantonese opera artist Sun Kim-long as guest director, ‘Quarrel on the Court’ from The Villain, the General and the Heroic Beauty demonstrates the traditional style of Hong Kong Cantonese opera. The Gongs and Drums performance series brings audience an enjoyable evening of performances by students from the music and performance streams.
