A theatrical ode to joy, surprise and enchantment
by a poet of marginalisation and diversity
“The works of Pippo Delbono leave viewers alternately elated, drained, shocked and thoughtful.” The New York Times
Pippo Delbono puts the world on stage. His productions rage, provoke and move us to tears. They aim for the heart.
La Gioia highlights the consequences of living without understanding. It brings anguish and ecstasy to the stage, accompanied by paper boats, flamenco dance, flowers by the thousand and a circus parade worthy of the great Fellini.
Delbono is one of Europe’s most distinctive artistic voices, in the firmament of Pasolini, Beckett, Bausch and Kantor. Following in the footsteps of theatre greats Peter Brook and Ariane Mnouchkine, he won the European Prize for New Theatre in 2009, and his films have garnered prizes at festivals in both Nyon and Venice.
Delbono’s unique company joins professional actors with non-professional performers from the margins of society. His production La Gioia is an eighty-minute journey of surprise and enchantment. Embracing extreme feelings and the pain of the world, Delbono and his cast of misfits show us who we really are through ‘joy’.
