Living Kogei: Contemporary Japanese Craft from the Ise Collection
Visual Arts

Description
Description
New exhibition alert! UMAG will be showcasing over seventy kōgei works by prominent and emerging Japanese artists in a new exhibition ‘Living Kogei: Contemporary Japanese Craft from the Ise Collection’ (7 August–3 November 2019).
.
The modern Japanese term for artisan crafts, kōgei refers to a form of highly-skilled artistic expression associated with specific regions and craftsmen in Japan. Informed by centuries of tradition, these crafts have been revitalised and expanded in recent years, with emerging avant-garde tendencies competing with established practices and values embedded in Japanese culture.
.
Ranging from rustic ceramics and restrained lacquer wares to vibrantly coloured glass and metal, each demonstrates how contemporary artists appreciate and continue the long tradition of Japanese craft, while at the same time departing from convention in search of the new.
