Macbeth2.0
Description
Description
“Macbeth” is one of Shakespeare’s four great tragedies, and is often considered crucial to an in-depth understanding of his tragic works. The play portrays in great detail human greed and the psychological stress of committing crime. It is widely regarded as one of the most insightful plays in history on the subject of human desires. In “Macbeth 2.0” Macbeth, who has just won a battle, learns of the King’s intention to pass the throne on to his son. At this point a mysterious woman prophesies that Macbeth will instead be the next king. Macbeth concludes that for the prophecy to come true, he must kill the king with his own hands.
In 2012, Class 7A Drama Group staged another adaptation, entitled “Macbeth in Macao”, to explore rhythm of Shakespeare’s verses spoken in Cantonese, causing a wave of studying the uniqueness of the Cantonese language within local theatrical circles. Besides its rhythm, Cantonese is also endowed with unique tones. Every Cantonese word has its own pitch. In order to feature this characteristic in “Macbeth 2.0”, each word and stanza of the original play is given a musical conceit, thus heightening the tensions in the play with music-embedded Cantonese.
