Picturing Bauhaus: Erich Consemuller’s Photography of the World’s Most Famous Design School
Visual Arts

Description
Description
The great anniversary of the Bauhaus was the occasion for an exhibition by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, which is now being shown in Hong Kong: Photographs by Bauhaus artist Erich Consemüller (1902-1957) provide an informative insight into the world of teachers and students, and show examples of the architecture of school buildings and the products of individual workshops. Bauhaus director Walter Gropius had entrusted Consemüller with this important task. Around 300 photographs were thus taken in 1926/27. They served the school’s self-portrayal and, in this context, were an important component of institutional public relations work.
Some of the photographs by Erich Consemüller, on permanent loan from a Berlin private collection, are also dedicated to works from the workshops and the preliminary course at the early Bauhaus in Weimar.
