Description
YY9 Gallery is pleased to present “Rite of Spring” – a solo exhibition of Simone Boon. In this exhibition, the Dutch-born Hong Kong artist presents her new series of photography which intends to explore female identity and to give a different interpretation on the essence of human identity from a female perspective.
Simone has developed an utmost sensitivity on female as well as human identities due to her exposure to multicultural environments and ever-changing surroundings since her childhood. Inspired, influenced and motivated by philosophers such as Bergson and Kierkegaard, Simone has created her series of photographic work to explore the threshold of maturity of young ladies in a more or less conscious way, reflecting on the female essence in a philosophy of becoming. In her latest series, Simone Boon aims to explore the innocence of young girls, celebrating the vitality of springtime.
Simone Boon, who is Dutch in origin, and who has lived in various different countries such as British Borneo, the Netherlands, Venezuela, Belgium, Malaysia and Austria since her childhood days, has been based in Hong Kong since 2004. She received her Master and two Bachelor’s degrees in Fine Arts (Photography & Ceramics) from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. She has participated in numerous exhibitions in Hong Kong and overseas, and has done several commissions, collaborating in the world wide project City One minutes in the Rietveld Arsenale (2009) Venice, and most recently won the 2013 Grand Prize in Hong Kong Contemporary Art Award.
