It is the perception of other people’s worlds – worlds almost inconceivably strange, yet inhabited by people just like ourselves. Other worlds, other lives, even though so different from our own, have the power of arousing the sympathetic imagination, of awakening an intense and often creative resonance in others. We may never really understand, but once we genuinely try, we will see the world differently – we can imaginetheir world, with a sort of awe, and with this our own world is suddenly enlarged.
