Millennium Youth Orchestra
Millennium Youth Orchestra
Being recognised as one of the most active and exciting youth orchestras in Hong Kong, Millennium Youth Orchestra (MYO) has presented a wide array of concerts with its unique energy and style. The orchestra is charged with a mission to nurture young musicians, providing them proper music training, bringing them performing opportunities and growing their passion in music.
The unique characteristics of MYO may be experienced through the “MYO in Concert” series, where the orchestra plays music from the classical repertoire, contemporary music, newly commissioned works, broadway classics and film medleys from Hong Kong and overseas. Special stage effects run parallel with music in exciting both the ears and the eyes. In a regular concert a select of musicians may perform in a “divertimento” segment, featuring music from chamber to improvised gig. The segment is often a showcase of the young musicians’ creativity.
MYO was founded in October 1998. Two-times winner of the Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows gold medal of youth orchestra presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the orchestra has since garnered many positive reviews. MYO has frequented various Hong Kong venues and performed in Beijing and Xinjiang. Upon invitation, the orchestra participated the Asian-Pacific Harmonica Festival and 60th anniversary gala concert of establishment of the People’s Republic of China. MYO was one of the venue partners of the Shatin Town Hall (2008-2012).
MYO is also frequently found in the orchestra pit, providing musicals with live accompaniment, including the stories of Hans Christian Andersen, Disney’s Aladdin and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Le Petit Prince. The orchestra is also active in performing for charities, having raised fund for Lifeline Express and Wai Yin Association. From time to time MYO performs outside the concert hall and plays in TV stations, in upper central for the Lan Kwai Fong Festival and in the opening ceremony of Standard Chartered Marathon. The long list of composers who have worked with the orchestra includes Peter Kam, Chan Kwong-wing, Anthony Chue, Mui Kwong-chiu and Jolland Chan, and Hong Kong musicians Leo Ku, Alex Fong, Denise Ho, Justin Lo, Maria Cordero and Gary Tam.
