Sichuan Huge Puppet Troupe [China]

Introduction

The giant rod puppets of Sichuan Province originated in folk art and have a history of more than 300 years. The puppetry is one of the rarest theatrical genres in the world and was included in the first batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006.

The programme brings together the best in mythology, history and folklore, and features amazing stunts involving fast changes of faces, cloth changing and tea drinking and flicking of long sleeves by life-size puppets. The highly entertaining show with dance and live Chinese music offers an eye-opening opportunity to explore the rich array of traditional Chinese arts.

The Sichuan Huge Puppet Troupe boasts a superb team of puppet design artists, performers and dramatists, and has a wide-ranging repertoire including “Jade Lotus”, “Legend of White Snake”, “Three Battles with the White Bone Demon”, “Floral Umbrella Dance”, “Quick Change of Face” and “Long Ribbon Dance”. The troupe has toured the US, the UK, Spain, Chile, the Philippines and Malaysia in recent years, and performed in the “2022 See You in Beijing ” segment of the closing ceremony for the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games 2018.
